1870 Train Depot

Thomasville Visitors’ Center

One of the State’s Oldest and Best Railroad Depots

One of North Carolina’s oldest standing railroad depots became home to Thomasville’s Visitors’ Center in the summer of 2000. The original structure was built in 1870. The Thomasville Historical Society began restoration on the depot in 1975 and continued through 1977.

Application was made to the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources and the National Park Service to place the depot on the National Register of Historical Places. After visiting the depot, three Archives representatives Train Depot - present dayfrom Raleigh studied the application and made enthusiastic comments on the authentic restoration of the building. They stated that Thomasville’s Depot (presently Thomasville’s Visitors’ Center) is possibly the oldest and most authentically restored depot in the state.

In 1981 the Thomasville Depot was officially listed on the National Register of Historical Places. This most unique Thomasville Visitors’ Center is now open for your enjoyment, comfort and assistance. We have decorated one area of the building with beautiful and comfortable Bassett furniture, while yet another section of the building houses rotating displays. The displays have included exhibits such as Thomasville Furniture Industry’s Hemingway Collection, memorabilia from the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame, and others. Come in and sit a spell!
